I made the mistake of using free forum software because I was afraid of spending on something that I'm just starting without knowing whether it's going to go well.
I should have closed my eyes and started out with paid software because the free one limited my immediate growth.

I've used free software starting out.
I remember using version 1 of PhpBB. Then fancy PhpBB 2 came out but you had to hand-code in plugins. Sometimes installing a plugin meant 4 hours of the day.
Could you imagine that?! LOL
