SaaS boom

It seems like Software as a Service (SaaS) is getting more popular than traditional software platforms.

It's where most of the time, most of the main core software is hosted on the providers website rather than downloaded and hosted on yours.

It usually gives the provider more control and the ability to charge money better.

How do you feel about the practice in general?

As part of my job, I have to deal with SaaS products all the time. Some vendors are very good, some are terrible, and my job devolves from "how do I understand and fix this complex problem myself" to "how can I engage the idiots over at $SaaSVendor to actually do something before the heat death of the universe".

At its best, SaaS allows you to concentrate on the doing, and not the watering and feeding. You do have to be very selective about vendors though.

I just use rather than create them.
