Have any of you ever messed around with NodeBB before?
 
Yep, I played with it a bit when I had a dedicated server and was able to create my own VPS instances.
It was better served by having it's own install since it's node.js based. I remember that the setup/install was well different than what most are used to. And for their hosting, it used to be rather expensive.
It was interesting to play with, but overall, I was not that impressed by it.

So, it tends to be a resource hog then?

Not really any more than just about anything else... it was just limited in the extendability of it when compared to most forums. A large part of that is the limited update and interest by other developers.
