What do you think of the idea of member controlled forums?

This would be where members vote on all actions, new features, new sections, and decisions for the forum.

Instead of YOU (the forum owner) making the final decision, members would by voting and majority winning or something like that.

Could this be a successful way of running a forum?

Why, or why not?

I frequent one forum which has a commity with is voted for by the members and they then make decisions, it actually works quite well. I would probably introduce it if my member base got to a certain amount. Its nice that the loyal members have a voice.

I have seen many such forums, most open source software related. Community moderation is a good thing. People vote out spam and trolls. Just like in AskUbuntu.

There will be regular moderators, but they won't step in unless it is too bad.

It would be interesting to test, that's for sure.
