How do you feel about the idea of charging members $1 a year to be a member of your forum?

The idea of it would be two fold.

(1) Usually, only serious people are going to pay, even if it's just $1 and

(2) It can help make you some kind of revenue even if it's just a dollar

What do you think of this concept? Could you ever use it?

More people would pay if it is not about revealing their payment methods.

$1 seems to be a reasonable amount.

There are enough trolls who would pay and then demand privileges for the same.

You'd definitely have to put a bottom line of no extra privileges being dished out.

It's a payment to enter the club more or less and everyone is subject to the same rules.

No refunds.

It would be an interesting concept.

I mean, people don't want to share their credit / debit card details.

True.

But I would feel that a marketer wouldn't exactly target those types of people.

I spend money online. I trust it, but I also have security in place to protect me from ID theft and what have you.

I lost a lot of money because the other end remembered the settings. A few I got back through disputes, but some I lost.

I am very wary of sharing money without a proper check.

You definitely have to do it right.

There are services with auto-enable auto-renew. Even some reputed sites do that. They go dumb when we ask for a refund.
